Who is who in Australian Immigration?

Australian Parliament and Government

Australia has one of the world's tightest yet fair immigration policies. Making immigration law is the responsibility of the Australian Parliament. The broad rules that govern immigration to Australia are contained primarily in the Migration Act 1958, while the precise details are contained in the subsequent legislation called the Migration Regulations 1994.

DIAC

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) administers the Federal government's immigration policy.

The DIAC "Central Office" is located in Canberra - Australia's capital city. DIAC is also represented in 74 Australian overseas offices in 66 countries. Immigration matters overseas are normally handled by the DIAC officers based in Australian consulates and embassies in various countries.

MARA

The Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) was established to regulate the Australian migration advice industry with an aim of preventing poor and misleading advice being given to visa applicants. MARA has power to register migration agents, regulate the conduct of agents and impose sanctions including the cancellation or suspension of migration agent registration.

Registered Migration Agent

In Australia, migration agents must be registered with the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) in order to provide immigration assistance services. A registered Migration agent has sound knowledge of migration law and procedure and is bound to abide by a strict code of conduct.

A registered migration agent operates as a business entity and uses his sound knowledge and expertise to advice possible migrants and visa applicants charging them a fee for his/her services. This fee is different from the visa application fee and related charges associated with processing of the application by DIAC.
